How to Calculate Age Difference
The age difference between two people is the time between their two birth dates. Today’s date does not matter, which is why an age gap stays the same for life.
- Write both birth dates as year, month and day, with the later (younger person’s) date on top.
- Subtract the days. If the top day is smaller, borrow one month and add that month’s days.
- Subtract the months, borrowing 12 months from the year if needed, then subtract the years.
Example: one person was born on 4 August 1990 and the other on 19 March 1994. Days: 19 − 4 = 15. Months: 3 is smaller than 8, so borrow a year: 3 + 12 = 15 months and 1994 becomes 1993, then 15 − 8 = 7. Years: 1993 − 1990 = 3. The age gap is 3 years, 7 months and 15 days.
This uses the same borrowing method as our guide to calculating chronological age.
Age Difference Examples
| Older person born | Younger person born | Age difference |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Jan 1985 | 30 Jun 1988 | 3 years, 5 months, 18 days |
| 25 Dec 2000 | 2 Jan 2001 | 8 days, though they are born in different years |
| 15 May 1960 | 15 May 1975 | Exactly 15 years |
The second example shows why the birth years alone can mislead: 2001 − 2000 suggests one year, but the real age gap is just 8 days. A good age calculator for differences always works from the full dates.
Why Use an Age Difference Calculator by Birthday and Age?
Most people know a partner’s or sibling’s age but not always their exact birthday, so this tool accepts either. Start with ages for a quick estimate, then switch to birthdays when you have them for the exact figure. Both modes show who is older, the gap in months, weeks and days, and each person’s current age, so you get every answer in one place without a separate time difference tool.
Age Difference by Birthday vs by Age
If you know both birthdays, use the By birthday mode for an exact age difference to the day. If you only know two ages, the By age mode gives the gap in whole years, which can be off by up to a year because birthdays may fall at different times. For example, a 30-year-old and a 27-year-old are about 3 years apart, but the real gap could be anywhere from just over 2 to just under 4 years.
Age Gaps in Relationships
An age gap calculator is often used by couples who want to know their exact age difference. A few facts for context:
- Average age difference between couples: in the United States, husbands are on average about 2 years older than wives in opposite-sex marriages, based on census data. Most couples are within a few years of each other.
- The “half your age plus seven” rule: a popular rule of thumb says the youngest socially accepted partner is half your age plus seven. For a 40-year-old that is 27. It is a social guideline, not a scientific or legal rule.
- Maximum age difference between husband and wife: there is no maximum in law as long as both are adults; the legal requirement is the minimum age of marriage, which varies by country and state.
Age gap relationships work or struggle for many reasons, and the number on its own says little about a couple. Use the result as a fun fact, not a test.
Other Ways to Use an Age Difference Calculator
- Siblings: find the exact gap between brothers and sisters, useful for school planning.
- Parents and children: see how old a parent was when a child was born.
- Family history: compare generations in a family tree.
- Friends and colleagues: settle who is older, to the day.
To find one person’s exact age instead, use our chronological age calculator. For a baby’s age, try the age in months calculator.
Does the Age Gap Change Over Time?
The gap in years never changes, but how big it feels does. Ten years between a 5-year-old and a 15-year-old is two different life stages; ten years between a 45-year-old and a 55-year-old feels much smaller. That is why the calculator also shows the gap as a share of the older person’s age: the same gap is a smaller share as both people get older.
Age Difference Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate the age difference between two people?
Subtract the earlier birth date from the later one in years, months and days, or enter both birthdays in the age difference calculator above.
Can I calculate the age difference by age instead of birthday?
Yes. Switch to By age and enter both ages in years. The result is approximate, because the exact gap depends on the birthdays.
What is the average age difference between couples?
In the US, husbands are on average about 2 years older than wives in opposite-sex marriages. Many couples are within 1 to 4 years of each other.
What is the half your age plus seven rule?
It is a rule of thumb for the youngest socially accepted partner: divide your age by 2 and add 7. For a 30-year-old, that is 22. It is not a legal or scientific rule.
Does the age difference between two people ever change?
No. The gap between two birth dates is fixed for life. It only feels smaller as both people get older.
How do I calculate the age difference in years only?
Take the full years from the result above. By hand, subtract the birth years and take away one if the younger person’s birthday falls earlier in the year than the older person’s.
