Ratio IQ is a historical method. Modern IQ tests use deviation scores, and only a qualified psychologist can give and interpret a real IQ test.
What Is Mental Age?
Mental age is the age level at which a person performs on an intelligence or ability test, compared with typical performance at each age. A 9-year-old who solves problems like an average 11-year-old has a mental age of 11. The mental age psychology definition comes from early intelligence testing, and it is always compared with chronological age, the person’s real age since birth.
How to Calculate Mental Age
Here is how to calculate mental age by hand. If you already have an IQ score from a proper assessment, use the classic ratio formula:
To find IQ from a mental age, turn it around:
- Convert both ages to months for accuracy. 8 years 6 months = 102 months.
- Multiply or divide using the formula above.
- Convert back to years and months.
Example: a child aged 8 years 6 months (102 months) with an IQ of 110 has a mental age of 110 × 102 ÷ 100 = 112.2 months, about 9 years 4 months. The mental age calculator above does the same working for you.
IQ of 70: What Is the Mental Age?
It depends on the chronological age, because the ratio formula scales with age:
| Chronological age | IQ 70 → mental age | IQ 100 → mental age | IQ 130 → mental age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 years | about 4 years 2 months | 6 years | about 7 years 10 months |
| 10 years | 7 years | 10 years | 13 years |
| Adult (capped at 16) | about 11 years 2 months | 16 years | about 20 years 10 months |
The older Stanford-Binet method treated adult ability as reaching its peak around age 16, so it capped chronological age at 16 for adults. That is why an adult IQ of 70 is often described as a mental age of about 11. Use the cap option in the calculator to switch this on or off.
Mental Age Examples
| Chronological age | IQ | Mental age |
|---|---|---|
| 7 years (84 months) | 85 | about 5 years 11 months |
| 14 years (168 months) | 115 | about 16 years 1 month |
| 30 years (capped at 16) | 100 | 16 years |
Notice the third row: with the classic cap, every adult with an IQ of 100 has a mental age of 16, whatever their real age. This is one reason the ratio method was replaced for adults.
When to Use a Mental Age Calculator
A mental age calculator is useful for students learning the history of intelligence testing, for psychology assignments that ask how to find mental age from IQ, and for understanding older reports that describe a child by mental age. It can also help parents make sense of an age-equivalent score, which is a similar idea used on some modern tests. For decisions about education, support or diagnosis, always rely on the full report and the psychologist who wrote it, not on a single number from this mental age calculator.
A Short History of Mental Age and IQ
- 1905–1908: Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon created the first practical intelligence tests in France and introduced the idea of mental level by age.
- 1912: William Stern proposed dividing mental age by chronological age, the first intelligence quotient.
- 1916: Lewis Terman’s Stanford-Binet multiplied the ratio by 100, giving the familiar IQ number.
- 1939 onwards: David Wechsler introduced the deviation IQ, which compares a person with others the same age instead of using a ratio. Modern IQ tests use this method.
Mental Age vs Chronological Age
Chronological age is fixed by the calendar; mental age describes ability. When mental age is higher than chronological age, the ratio IQ is above 100; when it is lower, it is below 100. Read the full comparison in chronological vs mental age, and see all types of age.
Mental Age Calculator vs Online Mental Age Tests
Many websites offer a “mental age test” or “what is my mental age” quiz that asks about your habits and tastes. Those quizzes are for fun: they are not intelligence tests and do not measure mental age in the psychological sense. This mental age calculator does something different: it applies the real ratio formula to an IQ score or mental age you already have from a proper assessment.
Mental age is also not a diagnosis. Labels such as “has the mind of a 7-year-old” can be misleading and hurtful, especially for people with intellectual disability. Modern assessments describe a person’s strengths and needs in much more detail.
Mental Age Calculator FAQs
How do you calculate mental age?
Multiply the IQ by the chronological age and divide by 100. A 12-year-old with an IQ of 90 has a mental age of 10.8 years, about 10 years 10 months.
What is the mental age of someone with an IQ of 70?
For a 10-year-old it is 7 years. For adults, using the classic cap of 16, it is about 11 years 2 months.
What is my mental age?
A true mental age comes from a standardized intelligence test given by a psychologist. If you have an IQ score, enter it with your age in the calculator above.
Is a mental age test online accurate?
Quiz-style online mental age tests are for entertainment and are not scientific. Only standardized tests given by a qualified professional measure intelligence.
Is mental age still used in psychology?
Rarely. Modern tests use deviation IQ and age-equivalent scores instead, though the idea of mental age is still taught in psychology courses.
